Get Ready To Twist and Shout… It’s #FeelgoodFriday at Carlisle Races

By | Rhodes Media Blogs | No Comments

The spirit and sound of Beatlemania is coming to Carlisle Racecourse on Friday June 8th – the course’s annual #FeelgoodFriday!

Following what promises to be another thrilling afternoon of racing world renowned Beatles tribute band – The Mersey Beatles – will play a special post-race gig in the Paddock.

The band – who have played sold out tours of the USA and Europe and were the resident Beatles’ band at Liverpool’s world-famous Cavern Club for a decade – will play a hit-packed set of Fab Four classics.

Molly Dingwall, Carlisle Racecourse’s General Manager, said: “We love our Feelgood Friday events here at Carlisle and we are really excited to be bringing such a great band as The Mersey Beatles to the racecourse.

“They have played sell-out shows around the world and, later this year, are embarking on a big UK tour, so this is a great chance for racing and music fans to see them here first!

“Hopefully the day will be graced with lovely sunshine, some great action on the track and a brilliant post-racing gig in our paddock.

“So get the afternoon off work, put on your dancing shoes and head down here – it will be great to see you!”

This year marks the 55th anniversary of The Beatles playing Carlisle’s former ABC Cinema. Their February 1963 gig is now the stuff of local legend as it was after this show when John, Paul, George and Ringo were famously asked to leave a golf club dance, held at the Crown and Mitre Hotel, for being inappropriately dressed in leather jackets.

Not that fans of the world’s most famous band will encounter any such problems at Carlisle Racecourse on Friday June 8th.

Molly added: “You have no such worries as leather jackets, winklepickers, mini-skirts, or any Rock ’n’ Roll fashions, are more than welcome here on the day!

“The great thing about Feelgood Fridays are they are really relaxed, fun affairs. We want people to come here, let their hair down, enjoy the racing, great live music and have a fantastic time with friends.”

Described by the British Beatles Fan Cub as ‘the best Beatles tribute band’, The Mersey Beatles were all born and grew up in Liverpool. When it comes to stage performance, they brilliantly exude the inner and outer spirit of the original Fab Four from the costumes, the haircuts, the instruments and, of course, that unmistakable and legendary Mersey sound.

They have toured the world many times and can count John Lennon’s sister Julia Baird as a fan. Julia, who is director at The Cavern Club, said: “When I hear The Mersey Beatles, it really IS The Beatles”.

#FeelgoodFriday with The Mersey Beatles is on Friday June 8th. Gates open 12pm. First race is 2pm, last race 5pm. Adult tickets are £15 (in advance) or £18 (on the day).  All under 18s get in free when accompanied by an adult.

Brian Hughes Returns To Carlisle To Take Crown As Top Jumps Jockey

By | Rhodes Media Blogs | No Comments

Brian Hughes is back for Carlisle’s final National Hunt meeting of the season on Tuesday when he will be crowned the course’s top jumps jockey.

Ulsterman Hughes has enjoyed a fantastic 2017/18 season. He has chalked up more than 130 winners – 11 of those at Carlisle – including leading Waiting Patiently to an impressive win in Cumbria’s blue ribband jumps race, the Colin Parker Memorial Chase.

Now, fresh from riding Seeyouatmidnight to an eleventh-placed finish in Saturday’s Randox Health Grand National, Hughes goes into Tuesday’s season-closing meeting at Carlisle six winners clear of his nearest course rival Craig Nichol.

And he has no fewer than five rides in the seven-race card.

Molly Dingwall, Carlisle Racecourse’s General Manager, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming Brian back to the course again on Tuesday for our final jumps meeting of the season.

“He has been a regular here throughout the year and he has chalked up some really impressive wins, none more so than winning the Colin Parker back in November.

“With more than 130 winners to his name this season, Brian is second only to Richard Johnson in the Champion Jockey standings. He is a really popular guy and we are delighted he will finish the season here as our top jumps jockey.”

Among Hughes’ rides on Tuesday is the Donald McCain-saddled Mahler Lad in the 3m 2f Handicap Chase. The eight-year-old won last time out over three miles at Musselburgh in February.

Two other Hughes’ rides with form at Carlisle are Brian Ellison’s Pistol Park, who was second last time here in March, and Lily’s Gem. The Stuart Crawford-saddled five-year-old goes in the National Hunt flat race after posting second when last at the course.

Crawford, who leads the way as Carlisle’s top trainer with five winners this year, also has Crawfords Mill in the 2m 4f Handicap Chase where the five-year-old filly will take on the impressive Onlyfoolsownhorses.

Micky Hammond’s seven-year-old has triumphed in three of his last four outings, including a seven-length win at Carlisle back in May last year, although this is his first outing of the season.

One of the highlights of the day is sure to be be another intriguing match-up between the Lucinda Russell-trained Misfits and Stuart Coltherd’s Achill Road Boy in the Handicap Chase.

The pair fought out a thrilling contest over the same 3m 2f distance at Carlisle on March 31 when Achill Road Boy edged it by three quarters of a length.

Molly added: “It has been a good season here at Carlisle and we have seen some thrilling jumps racing.

“We lost a number of meetings earlier this year due to the weather, but ever since we have been delighted with the attendances which go to show National Hunt racing is a big draw here at this wonderful racecourse.

“After Tuesday, it’s then all systems go as we prepare for the return of the speed kings of racing, and the start of our flat season on Monday May 21.”

Gates open on Tuesday at 12.10pm. First race is 2.10pm and the last race is 5.40pm. Adult tickets are £15 (in advance) or £18 (on the day). All under 18s get in free when accompanied by an adult.
