Tom Chaplin is best known for being the lead singer in the anthemic, multi-million selling UK band Keane. Stepping out on his own in 2016, his solo album ‘The Wave’ debuted at Number 3 in the UK chart and features eleven incredibly honest and ultimately uplifting songs driven by his unmistakable voice. Cook Goes For More Glory At Carlisle

By | Rhodes Media Blogs | No Comments

Jockey Danny Cook will be looking to continue his fantastic run of form at Carlisle on Sunday as Cumbria’s premier racecourse hosts its first weekend meeting of 2017.

The Thirsk-based rider has won seven of his 23 races at Carlisle this season – including an impressive double on Ouro Branco and Johanos on March 9.

Cook’s triumphs at Carlisle last time out began a series of five straight wins before he rode 12/1 shot Nietzsche to a highly respectable third in the Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham on Wednesday.

The popular jockey’s red hot form recently had Racing UK’s experts purring: “Cook has made a name for himself in the north as a never-say-die rider who refuses to accept when he is beaten.”

This Sunday Cook has rides booked on Sandy Thomson’s The Dutchman in the 2.45 Racing UK In HD Novices’ Chase before joining forces again with Grand National winning trainer Sue Smith on board Cloudy Too in the 3.55 Thornby Veterans’ Handicap Chase.

Smith also has No Planning, partnered with Sean Quinlan, entered in the 3.55.

Elsewhere on the six-race card, Peter Winks-trained Modulus will be looking to make it three wins from three races in the 3.20 Watch Racing UK Today Novices Handicap Hurdle after triumphs at Newcastle and Sedgefield already this month.

Nicky Richards and Donald McCain are among the other top trainers with runners entered on Sunday.

It is all set to be a top day’s racing with all children enjoying FREE ADMISSION.

“There is something really special about our Sunday meetings, a real buzz around a packed grandstand and paddock so we can’t wait for the action to start.

“We have some really intriguing match-ups on the card and it will be great to see if Danny Cook can continue his fine form and whether Modulus can continue his wonderful March form which has already seen two wins.”

Tickets for Sunday’s meeting are £14.00 (in advance) or £17.00 (on the day). Under-17s get in free when accompanied by a paying adult. Gates open 12pm. First race 2pm, last race 5.25pm.

Carlisle playing its part in Gold Cup and Grand National glory

By | Rhodes Media Blogs | No Comments

As all eyes in the racing world turn to Cheltenham and the Grand National one Aintree hero is first looking for more success at Carlisle on Thursday (March 9).

Nigel Hawke, winning jockey aboard 1991 Grand National great Seagram, is now a successful trainer based in Devon who saddled a double at Carlisle’s last meeting back in February.

One of his winners that day was Lord Ballim who holds an entry in both this Thursday’s conditional riders’ hurdle and the novices’ handicap hurdle at Cumbria’s premier racecourse.

The West Country handler has also pencilled in recent Taunton third Ouro Branco in the Racing UK Intermediate Open National Hunt Flat Race in what is Carlisle’s third meeting of 2017.

After Thursday’s meeting Nigel will turn his attention to his five runners at next week’s Cheltenham Festival before the National on April 8 where he is lining up 10-year-old Samingarry to run.

Other Cheltenham connections at Carlisle on Thursday include Nico de Boinville, who rode 2015 Gold Cup winner Coneygree. He has been booked for the mount on Ben Pauling-trained Linenhall in the seventh and final race.

Nico, based In Lambourn with top trainer Nicky Henderson, rode his first winner at Carlisle earlier this season.

Grand National winning trainer Donald McCain – who secured a treble success at Carlisle in the opening meeting of 2017 – has no fewer than nine entries on Thursday.

They include Freddies Portrait, winner at Carlisle on February 8, and Flemens Story, winner last time out in January over three miles at Nenagh in Ireland.

Geraldine McKay, Carlisle Racecourse’s General Manager, said: “The excitement around racing is building ahead of Cheltenham and Aintree.

“And at Carlisle we are proud to continually play our part. In recent months we have seen many of the horses now being tipped for success at these showpiece and world famous meetings here in Cumbria.

“They include Bristol De Mai – one of the leading contenders for the Gold Cup – who ran in the Colin Parker Memorial Intermediate Chase at Carlisle back in October and the Brian Ellison-trained Definitly Red, now second favourite for the National, who won a cracker here over two miles and a half miles at the same meeting.

“Who knows which stars of the future will be on show here on Thursday when we expect another great day of National Hunt racing at Carlisle.”

Scarborough Open Air Theatre is on course for a record breaking year as more music fans than ever before are set to head to the Yorkshire coast this summer.

More than 45,000 people have already bought tickets for shows by such chart-topping acts as Little Mix, Olly Murs, Kaiser Chiefs, Tom Jones and Cliff Richard.

Last year 50,000 people attended concerts at the OAT – Europe’s largest open air theatre. And with more acts still to be announced promoters Cuffe and Taylor are ready to smash the theatre’s attendance record any day now.

The North-West based company is also set to unveil a new television ad for this summer’s series of gigs at the OAT which will highlight what’s on offer in Scarborough this year.

Cuffe and Taylor director Peter Taylor said: “The response to this summer’s shows has been simply fantastic. We are looking to increase the number of shows from the 11 we held in 2016 to 18 this year. That means thousands more music fans coming to the Yorkshire coast which is fantastic for the local tourist economy.

“Some of the shows are either sold out, or very nearly sold out, so I would advise any fans wanting to come and see their favourite act at the OAT to not delay in securing their tickets.

“This week we have launched a brand-new television advert which will spread the word about what’s going on at Scarborough OAT. We are delighted to be promoting Scarborough and the beautiful Yorkshire coast on the national stage and really can’t wait for the legendary Beach Boys to kick off the first OAT gig of 2017 on May 24.

“There are more big names still to be announced but 2017 is already shaping up to be an amazing year at Scarborough OAT.”

More than 100,000 tickets will go on sale across the 18-planned events for 2017. And with more than 40% of gig goers to Scarborough OAT expected to come from outside the YO postcode area, as they did in 2016, it is estimated the boost to the local tourism economy could be in the region of £5m*

Janet Deacon, Tourism Manager at Scarborough Borough Council, said: “The ever growing summer schedule at the Open Air Theatre is a significant part of the county’s annual event calendar and strong visitor economy.

“These fantastic ticket sales reflect the popularity of the theatre and the reputation of  the Yorkshire coast as a great destination for first class entertainment for all the family.”

Following the Beach Boys on May 24 will be Yorkshire’s very own Kaiser Chiefs (May 27) and then indie legends The Charlatans (June 16).

Tickets for concerts at Scarborough OAT are available via (0844 844 0444) and or in person from Scarborough Open Air Theatre Box Office (01723 818111) and the Discover Yorkshire Coast Tourism Bureau (01723 383636).
